Ever since John and Jean played with their pets Spot and Puff and hung out with farmer Zeke (for some reason, the Catholic school version didn't use the names Dick and Jane), I've been in awe of the printed word. And I've been fortunate to have carved out a wonderful career using words to promote products and services.
Coming up through the ranks (from proofreader to creative director) at Book-of-the-Month Club I learned from the best in the direct-marketing business about concepting, writing, editing, proofing, managing and developing creative for member catalogs and acquisition efforts.
Direct mail, print, enclosures, DRTV, company videos – more than a dozen targeted book clubs gave me exposure to all audiences and brought out my natural flair for capturing the right voice. Later, Bookspan (the merger of BOMC and Doubleday Book Club) offered even more book club choices; my subsequent foray into freelance offered me the opportunity to sharpen my skills at web-related copy.
Currently, I'm the VP, Copy Lead for Citi Cards' in-house agency, where my skills (leadership, mentoring and just plain coming up with great ideas and developing them, for example) are put to use managing copywriters and a proofreader. My team develops emails, statement messages, banners, mobile copy, customer service scripts — pretty much anything our clients choose us to produce — saving the company millions of dollars versus an external agency.
I'm proud to say I love what I do and I do what I love; how lucky is that!
